The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild was the fanciful private residence of Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, wife of Maurice Ephrussi, a wealthy banker. The Baroness was an avid collector of art and antiques. The villa was built between 1904 and 1912by Belgian architect Aaron Messiah. His brief was to recreate the splendour of the palace of Versailles for the pleasure of the Baroness and her social set.
She died in 1934 and bequeathed the stunning villa, it's contents and its vast ornamental gardens to the Académie des Beaux Arts, of the Institut de France. The villa and its garden is open to the public and is well worth a visit.
It is open from 10am until 6pm in the summer and from 2pm until 6pm in the Winter months.
Tickets start from €5 for students to €17 for full individual rate.
