CANNES
Accessibility in Cannes
Cannes is served by the long smooth walkway of La Croisette along its beach front. To this end it is a user friendly town for wheechair users. Regulations are finally begining to catch up with peoples needs and facilities are slowly being improved. However Cannes is an ancient city too and well preserved so isome of the older streets and establishments can be restrictive and access is not 100%. We are constantly updating this information please read and add your own reviews based on your personal experiences.
Cannes beach has good accessibility for wheelchair users. It is accessed via La Croisette which is flat, smooth and has pavement ramps. There is a wide, sloped ramp down to the beach itself if you are with people who can assist you.
There are beaches that are specifically for disabled users called 'Handiplage'. Facilities include hard ground parking in shaded spots, toilets, showers, changing rooms and specialist vehicles for rolling over the sand, there are a limited number available. The beaches are clearly marked with the 'handiplage' sign.
Tip: Get details before you go
Look in the RG directory, under Cannes - Accessibility, for contact details and check out everything online before you go. |
Cannes 'Handiplage'There are beaches that are specifically designed for disabled users. In Cannes it is called Bijou Plage and you can find details of it online on the handiplage website. These beaches are manned during the high season with people who can assist you into and out of the water.
They have access to purpose designed equipment including mats to allow wheelchair access onto the beach and 'tiralo's' which allow you to roll into the water. There are all the usual facilities also, toilets, parking, changing rooms and showers. The beaches are manned from June to September.
There are some great websites detailing French disabled services very comprehansively however, these sites are usually only to be found in French. Find a French speaker to translate if you are not proficient in the language yourself and find out fully all the holiday activities specially designed for your enjoyment.
| The public transport system in france is very good and the entire coastline is well serviced by buses and trains. There are special 'handibus' that are identified by the 'handi' sign on the front of them.
You can expect to receive assistance and there are wider spaces inside to accommodate wheelchairs. Fares are subsidized, ask at the nearest tourist office for information on how to get discounted fares. Trains also have facilities for wheelchair users, are free and offer upgraded seats for physically disabled. |
Look out for subsidised fares
Fares are in some case free, including the people who are travelling with you for the purpose of assistance |
There are many associations and clubs that deal with organising leisure and sporting activities for disabled people. A lot of these clubs are geared towards French residents but there are some that organise holiday activities too.
You'll find all the contact details for the clubs listed in our RG directory under Cannes - Accessibility and they will, hopefully, be able to help you find exactly what you are looking for. Sports and activities covered include, swimming, tennis, sailing, boules, triathalon, Pottery and cooking courses and Braille.
Many of the websites are through French only, so if you don't speak it, try and use a translator. The tourist offices always have English speakers.
