The French Riviera, as a holiday destination is largely credited to the British aristocracy, desperate to escape their own dreary weather and drafty homes. Cannes is said to have been 'discovered' by a former Lord Chancellor, Lord Brougham
All Year Round
In the 1950's the Hollywood set and American literati moved in. They much preferred it as a summer jet set location with its luxury apartments, villas and yachts to rent. The film Festival, in May, helped to establish Cannes on the world stage assisted in no small way by a stream of beautiful starlets.
Nowadays Cannes is seen as an all year round destination. The business of the summer kicked off by the May film festival and the mild winter climate attracting the older more retired clientele and tourists looking for a more gentle pace of life. There are many reasons to visit at any time of year.

Cannes in Spring
Springtime on the Riviera is an amazing time. The sun is gathering momentum for a long hot summer but has not yet reached boiling point, so it is the perfect temperature for sightseeing and walking. It's also the time when everything hits its growth spurt and the entire coastline is blooming.
Early Spring is a relatively quiet time of year so there is less competition for holiday rentals or apartments to rent and there is more chance that you will have your choice of accommodation. Late Spring is the offical start of the tourist season and, although the summer months are the busiest time of year, May is film festival time and Cannes is hopping. It is estimated that 70,000 people descend on the small town.
Cannes in Summer
In Summertime there is a sense that everyone is on holiday, because the majority of people are. It's an atmosphere that's infectious and the entire town feels alive with holiday makers. Cannes' beaches get very busy but there are lots of getaways all along the coast.
You need to be in the spirit of things, taking things slowly, prepared to relax and hang around or else it will drive you crazy. If you don't like crowds then wait until September or head for the hills. The sea is also a great escape. Rent your own boat or take a ferry trip out to the islands or up to St Tropez.
Cannes in Winter
Famous for its winter sun this is the time to come if you need to escape the grey skies of Northern Europe. Not necessarily for the warmth but for that rich, deep blue, clear sky it's absolutely perfect. Cannes is quiet in Winter but that makes it a good time to explore without the crowds.
There is also the option of skiing. There are three ski stations within a 2 hour drive of Nice Airport and close to Cannes. It means that you can have the best of both worlds, skiing by day and returning to city nightlife for your apres ski entertainment.
