Wheelchair access and awareness is on the increase for definite. Of course it is nowhere near as good as it could be nor indeed should be but facilities are improving all the time. With the mild climate in the South of France much of the living is done outdoors and at street level which is a considerable advantage and means many of the activities and facilities are accessible.
Accessibility, Monaco Town
Monaco is slightly disadvantaged, geographically, in that the mountains sweep down closer to the sea at this point of the coast. It is therefore not built on a plain like Nice or Cannes. This means that the streets in Monaco are steep and hilly.
The pavements however are smooth and well maintained and there are also a lot public lifts at street level to take you into the shopping centre, hospital, train station and different street levels.

There are free maps located at various points on the streets in Monaco, these have everything very clearly marked.
Lifts and Access Monaco is pretty well equipped for wheelchair users. There are parking facilities, lifts and access to all the major tourist and holiday attractions and on the streets too. Monaco maybe a steep and hilly city but there are public lifts that will take you between the multitude of street levels and gradients.
These are always clean, well lit, well maintained and clearly signposted around the city. There are public toilet facilities, specially marked buses and access public buildings that are all specially designed for people with reduced mobility.
Pick up one of the free town maps, from the airport, tourist office or at various dispensers on the street in Monaco. You will find the lifts, toilets and parking spaces clearly marked. Look in the RG directory under 'Monaco - Accessibility' for contact details of service providers in Monaco.
Accessibility, Monaco Beaches
Monaco beach is very well suited to wheelchair access. The facilities and services are excellent and the sea is nicely sheltered by the man made bay created by the sea walls. The boulevard is wide, smooth and flat giving you access to the entire length of the beach.
The beach runs parallel to the road side where there are parking spaces marked for handicapped cars. There is also underground parking with lifts to the pavement. There are wide gentle slopes that take you down to the actual beach which is marked as a 'handiplage' beach. This means that there are facilities and people on hand to help you onto the beach and in and out of the water.
Tip: Parking is free for wheelchair users
Don't forget to bring your own disabled parking/car sign especially if you are going to be hiring a vehicle. This allows you the same courtesies that you receive in your own country
