MONT BORON

Why visit Mont Boron

Mont Boron is certainly worth a visit whether you have chosen it as the place to stay for your vacation or not. There are plenty of view points where you can gaze on the amazing vistas from its heights, great picnic spots in its acres of national park and some of the most beautiful villas that you can find in all of Nice. So close to the city it is a supremely tranquil spot and has some of the longest standing history of the area.

Ancient beginings
The habitation of the area of Mont Boron is thought to date back almost 400,000 years and represent the oldest signs of human habitation on the coast.

Archeological findings support the theory that this area, known as the 'Terra Amata' was inhabitated by the now extinct 'Homo Erectus' or 'Upright Man' settlers.

The site shows evidence of dwellings, tool making and hunting. You'll find much more information in the Museum Terra Amata, details of which you will find in the RG Directory under 'Nice-Attractions-Museums'.

This location became strategically important during the turbulent years of this regions early history and, through the middle ages, saw many battles and wars fought here. It was occupied by different people including the Moors and followed a similar fate to that of Nice.

In 970 Mont Boron was deforested and remained so until 1862. In 1396 the town of Nice aquired the mountain for pastoral use but decided to replant it in the late 1800's. In 1866 the reforestation was completed and the Mountain now hosts a protected national park area of 57 hectares.
