Nice Promenade

How to get to Nice Promenade

Nice is a main city hub in the Mediterranean. Access has never been easier, quicker or more flexible than it is right now. With an international airport, a main train station and a fantastic public transport system within the city, getting there and getting around has never been so smooth and simple.

Nice Promenade by air.

Nice International airport is the full stop on the western end of Nice Promenade. Touch down from any of the daily international flights and you can practically exit the airport on foot and be on Nice Promenade in the blink of an eye. There are daily flights from every major destination in Europe, North Africa, North America and further afield. Find details of flight operators on Nice International Airport website.

Nice Promenade by rail.

Nice train station has been in operation since the Victorian times. The building of it was financially assisted by the British in order to speed the journey south for the wealthy aristocrats who had found their second home on the shores of the French Riviera.

There was some debate at the time, in the late 1800's, about the station being built near the port but it was decided to put it 'out of town' so as not to spoil the natural beauty of Nice. A notion that is laughable now, as Nice train station is right in the middle of the city as we know it, linked to the sea front and Nice Promenade by a tram and to the rest of the city by bus.

Nice train station is a main rail link between Paris and the South as well as daily trains into Italy and Spain. An old line between Nice and Moscow has also recently been reopened which brings Eastern Europe back into the rail link between Nice and the rest of the continent.

Nice Promenade by bus.

The bus system in Nice has recently been revolutionised by the standardising of all the fares which has seen an increase in bus usage by 50% in the last two years. The fares are a standard €1 no matter where you are going which has simplified things for tourists and visitors to the city. Bus route maps for Nice are available on the Ligne d'Azur website. From the airport the bus number for Nice Promenade is 98.

A new travel card has just been launched. Due to commence on 1st March 2011 is a new one day travel card called the Carte Azur. This card will allow unlimited daily travel on all buses and trams for the princely sum of €1. It's a stroke of genius that will eventually be rolled out throughout the Alpes Maritimes and all the various bus services. Initially the Carte Azur will apply to all services in Nice and Monaco. It is available to buy from the bus station in Nice, tourist offices and ticket sellers. See the website for addresses close to where you are staying.

Nice Promenade by road

Nice Promenade has two lanes in both directions along the length of it. A wide strip of land between sea and land it is lined with iconic palm trees that form a definitive skyline for the city of Nice. The A8 motorway is the main arterial route for the city of Nice. It runs from East to West along this part of the Cote d'Azur and links with motorway routes into Italy, Spain and north towards Paris. Nice Promenade has it's own Junction off the A8 motorway which is Junction number 50.

Nice Promenade by sea

Nice Promenade rounds the corner of the headland on the eastern edge of Nice city and lands in Nice Port. This is the main ferry terminal for Ferry operators and also the Marina for private yachts and cruise liners. The main ferry routes that are in operation are between Nice and Corsica and Nice and more local areas like Cannes and Saint Tropez. Many of these more local routes are only operational during the summer months so try to check online or visit Nice Port before planning your journey.

Nice Promenade by taxi

The Nice taxi's have something of a reputation locally and they are not used as frequently by residents as they are in other countries like the yellow cabs in New York or the black cabs in London. They are pricey and can be difficult to get hold of. There are taxi ranks outside both terminals of Nice Cote d'Azur International Airport and journey fares into Nice city centre and Nice Promenade will cost in the region of €25 to €30 nd more at night. This seems reasonable enough until you factor in that Nice airport is just 4 km from the city centre and you will be charged for extra luggage. Just check the fare with the driver before you embark on your journey so that you have discussed it in advance. There is one central taxi number for all taxis in ice. You can find it in our local directory under Nice - transport.
