Nice Old Town, or Vieux Nice as it is called locally, is largely a pedestrian area. the narrow streets were built at a time when horsepower was quite literally just that and the only vehicles through the streets were horses and donkeys. As a consequence your best mode of transport is to wander through old Nice on foot.
It is possible to cycle through the lanes and squares and you will also come across the ubiquitous French Riviera Scooter, a favourite mode of transport on the Cote d'Azur.
How to get to Old Nice from the train station.
The main train station or Gare de Ville in Nice is situated centrally but towards the North of the city. At the time of construction there was hot debate over whether it should be located closer to the port but it was deemed to close to the main promenade of Nice where it was feared that it would disturb the peace and enjoyment of the town's seafront.
It wasn't a bad choice in the end as the town has grown to encompass the train station and it is central enough to be a main hub for the town and far enough away to not spoil the coast. It is also serviced by regular buses, a nearby tram, taxi's as well as being pretty much within walking distance of all Nice's central areas.
