The original city of Nice, as it was, built by the Greeks, was located on the top of the small hill that divides Nice Promenade from Nice Port. When this small enclave was ultimately destroyed during the battles with France the town of Nice spread out along the sea front from the bottom of the hill.
The Old Town remains tucked in the shadow of the hill and the Promenade des Anglais in a rough triangular shape. Comprised of elegant squares like Palais de Justice, the market place of Cours de Saleya and the atmospheric, tall narrow streets of Vieux Nice sloping up towards the château.
