The original city of Nice, as it was, built by the Greeks, was located on the top of the small hill that divides Nice Promenade from Nice Port. When this small enclave was ultimately destroyed during the battles with France the town of Nice spread out along the sea front from the bottom of the hill.
The Old Town remains tucked in the shadow of the hill and the Promenade des Anglais in a rough triangular shape. Comprised of elegant squares like Palais de Justice, the market place of Cours de Saleya and the atmospheric, tall narrow streets of Vieux Nice sloping up towards the château.

The Old Town of Nice, also referred to locally as Vieux Nice is a triangular shape and a veritable warren of winding streets and surprise piazzas or squares.
The Italian influence is easy to see in the style of the architecture and structure of the buildings. Old Nice has become an artisan area with many of the shops and boutiques displaying local arts or specialities and many of the restaurants serving traditional food.
