The commune of Eze lies on the French Riviera in the most South Western corner of France. A mountainous area between Nice and Monaco, Eze is split between its famous perched village and the ribbon settlement along the beach front that is called Eze-bord-de-mer or Eze-sur-mer.
Eze village is what is known as a perched village or 'Village Perché' as it is called in French. These villages were built in this manner as a way of dealing with the dramatic topography and also as a means of defence during less settled times.
Eze village sits like an eagle poised for flight on a 429 metres peak, a stones through from the blue waters of the Med. It is located in an area known locally as The Corniches and is accessed by the Moyenne Corniche and from there by foot. The steep narrow medieval passageways are little more than a donkey's breadth wide and are still pedestrianised today.

The residents of Eze village are known as Ezasques and have occupied this mountain top village for hundreds of years.
At its highest peak Eze soars to 650 metres with a suddenness that is dizzying and drops all the way to sea level in less than 2kilometres. The road between the seafront and the village takes almost 10 kilometres to wind down the mountainside while the direct route along ancient footpaths is 2.5 kilometres.
The perched villages are famous along this stretch of the coast as it has always played a significant defensive role in the history of the area from the ancient Greeks through the Roman invasions and into modern history.
Today they are impressive relics of a forgotten time, beautiful and intriguing monuments to a different era and also living breathing modern villages where people live, make their homes and work every day. They are a triumph of preservation over the demands of the modern world and those that inhabit it.
