Eze-sur-Mer is essentially a beach front location and, as a holiday destination, it is all about the beautiful bay, the clear water and the magnificent scenery. It is unique in that it is close to the busy tourist centres of Nice and Monaco but the rise of the land and the jutting of the headlands have erected a natural ring of seclusion around this tranquil spot. It is rich in history, natural beauty and has been the choice of many a famous visitor as a holiday destination for generations from famous philosophers, composers, writers and artists to European royalty and most recently, rock royalty of the band U2 who continue to find creative inspiration on the shores of Eze-sur-Mer. "I learned that from the sun, when it goes down, it pours then in the sea, the gold of inexhaustible richness's." - Frederic Nietzsche. The perched village of Eze towers above the seaside shores of Eze-sur-Mer barely distinguishable from the craggy rock face that it clings to.
It is well worth the effort it takes to arrive there as the village is a living monument to an ancient era. The modernisations of this medieval specimen are tucked behind metre thick walls, stone portals and wooden doors designed to repel the fiercest of enemies.
Take a bus, drive or, for the very 'sportive', walk to the old village from Eze bord de mer. Of all the famous perched villages in the South of France it is probably in the most dramatic setting of all of them with its commanding views of the sea that drop away as far as St Tropez and all the way into Italy.
The village bears the influences of it's many inhabitants from the prodigious Celtic Ligurian tribes of the early centuries to Romans, Moors and noble Italian families.
| | Nowadays its thick defensive walls harbour restaurants, hotels, gardens, ruins, sculptures and an array of interesting artist atelier shops and boutiques.
You can browse amongst tiny shops selling jewellery, clothes, hand crafted leather, crystal, perfume and paintings, bags, tapestries and a multitude of locally produced products.
Eze Village is one of the jewels of the French Riviera and a not-to-be-missed destination. |
| "Who has dreamt me? Who has created me? To whom have I said yes?" - Mélisand, earth goddess. Allow the earth goddesses of Jean-Phillippe Richard to lead you through this magical garden of botanical wonders. You will see wonderful examples of mature cacti, agaves and aloe plants clinging to the rock face with views that drop away to St Tropez and Italy.
The gardens also feature the works by artist Jean-Phillippe Richard, who's series of 'earth goddesses' inhabit the gardens like nymphs set to charm and alert you to the contemplative beauty surrounding you. His works can be found in Paris, New York and California.
At the top of the gardens you will find the ruins of a castle that was destroyed by order of King Louis XIV during the Spanish war of succession in 1709. During the height of the 'Belle Epoch' era it is said that a small bar was set up here for the refreshment of the visitors of the day, sadly missing today however.
In it's stead their are many nooks and crannies and areas of contemplation as this garden lends itself more to the wonder of nature than the demands of tourists and it is hard to tear yourself away from the magnitude of the view. | |
| "Eze… sinks at the top of an isolated pyramid, its silhouette get out hardly on the transparencies of the skyline… The scratches of the path which goes down towards the strikes seems like the golden laces of its black blouse;" - Stéphen Liégeard, philosopher, 1887. Eze has many properties that have had famous residents, visitors over the years. It is easy to research who and where they have stayed or owned houses. Design your own tour and go and walk in the steps of the great and the good.
The Riquier mansion was named after a famous family from Nice who lived there from the 12th century until the end of the 15th century. It passed to notable families throughout the middle ages and eventually charmed an American composer, Samuel Barlow, so much that he forsook his native New York to relocate there.
French philosopher, Maurice Blanchot, purchased a house in the old village in the 1950's. An old house located on Bournou's Street in the heart of the village he mentions it in some of his writings.
Prince Guillame of Sweden purchased a parcel of land and buildings that he named Chateau d'Eza in the 1920's. It has since been restored and converted to a four star hotel in the vilage.
| | Yugoslavian composer Zlatko Balokovic was also enchanted by the village of Eze and, in 1923, bought property there, an old 'relais' or resting place for travellers.
He restored and converted it to become the now famous, Chevre d'Or. Now a four star hotel it also has a wonderful terrace to spoil yourself with an aperitif with a view.
This beautiful hotel has attracted world famous visitors such as President Clinton, Walt Disney, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco.
|
| More recently U2 band members Bono and the Edge became residents on the beach in Eze-sur-Mer. Their beautiful villa stands directly on the beach and houses a recording studio which has inspired not only them but also some of their famous musician friends to be creative including Michael Stipe from REM. Famous visitors to Eze have included Naomi Campbell, Quincy Jones, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Lennie Kravitz and Tina Turner.
