VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER
Insider Tips for Villefranche-sur-Mer
Insider Tip 1 |
Local Drinks |
Don't forget to try a Pastis and a Noisette. Pastis is the local liquor, drunk as a aperitif mixed with water. It's that cloudy pale yellow drink that you see old men in bars drinking. It's strong, 40-45 per cent alcohol, but mixed down with icy cold water, the aniseed flavour is refreshing.
|
A noisette is the name given to a short, sharp expresso shot of coffee with a splash of foamy hot milk topping it off. Think minature capucino. It's the perfect size if you are cafe hopping and don't want to drink too much coffee and perfect at the end of a big meal.

High Seas |
| You'll need a permit before you can take to the high seas in a motorboat with a motor bigger than 6cv, that includes some jet skis. Some hire places include a skipper but what better place to qualify for your permit than down in the sheltered waters of the Med. |
Ocean pro run two days courses through English and it's a great way to spend a few days of your holiday, get out on the water and learn something new at the same time. Plus you then have your license for the next time.
Insider Tip 3 |
Sun Protection |
If you do get out on the water do not forget really high factor sunscreens and hats at the very least. Try and arrange that there is some shade available, with the cooling sea air you can forget how harsh the sun is on your skin. Watch out for serious sun burn, not a fun way to end a day.
|
Freeze bottles of water to take out with you, even if it's just to the beach. They'll gradually melt and give you cold water to drink for longer.
Insider Tip 4 |
Self Catering |
Take a picnic. There are beach clubs and restaurants along the beach but they can be expensive, especially on a daily basis. There are supermarkets and fruit stalls in the village so you can be creative and independent with your food.
|
Some things are taxed more heavily in France and some things are just overpriced, especially if it's in high demand. Soft, fizzy drinks can be expensive, as can spirits in restaurants. Stick to what the locals drink; water, wine, syrups for the kids, coffee and Pastis.
Insider Tip 5 |
Money savers |
Ask for a carafe or pichet of water as opposed to bottled water. With EU regulations gone are the days when you need to be worried about drinking tap water. Ordinary water is fine to drink and you won't be charged for it. Also brand name prepackaged ice creams can be very expensive,
|
stick to ice cream shops or buy boxes of icecreams in the supermarket and keep them in the freezer at your rented villa or apartment. Order your wine by the 'pichet' if a bottle is too much between you. It's usually a cheaper local wine but is usually very drinkable and takes the stress out of choosing a bottle.
