All year round is the short answer to that question. It really depends on what you are looking for from your vacation. People have been holidaying in Villefranche for, quite literally, hundreds of years but their reasons for coming were perhaps a little different.
Traditonally visitors came in the Winter months but this was during an era when life was not quite so easy and weather conditions had a more severe impact on people personally. Especially on their health and at the time physicians were recommending that their wealthy patients actually went south to 'avail of the healing sea air'.
A Different Era
With no central heating or double glazed windows the Victorians and Central Europeans liked to come here specifically for the mild winter climate. It also conveniently contributed to the demarcation of the classes with only the wealthiest able to take such trips.
However, with fashion dictating modesty and pale complexions frolicking on the beach was not much of an ancient past time and peoples tastes were always going to change. Time moved on and and our holiday requirements have changed too. Now we want sun, fun, a great atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, beaches, great food and good facilities. The French Riviera was ahead of the pack in its heyday and it does a good job of remaining so to this day.

Villefranche in Spring
This is a really good time to visit if you prefer to avoid the holiday crowds on your vacation. It's a particularly beautiful time of year when the spring flowers are in bloom and the air is filled with their intense fragrance.
It's easy to see why this part of France is a centre for the perfume industry. There are always festivals and events ongoing along the coast in most of the towns, the French are as interested in entertaining the local people as much as they are in looking after their tourists so you avoid that 'dead', 'off-season' feel that you find in some tourist retreats. The nearby Nice Carnival in February is a sight to see or the Battle of the Flowers, held in the Port de la Sante, in Villefranche.
Summer in Villefranche
This is now the most popular time to come and visit Villefranche. The local population can triple in volume during the summer months. That's not bad news if you like to feel 'in the thick of things' on your holiday. The atmosphere is lively, fun and busy which can be perfect for your vacation.
The town is well set up to handle its visitors and there are lots of activites and events scheduled to keep everyone happy. The Citadelle stage musical recitals, an open air cinema and the permanent museum exhibitons. There are watersports on the beach, tennis on the municipal courts and lots of cafes and bars and markets that are all part of French village life.
Winter in Villefranche
Well some things never change and, while summer is the new 'hot' time to visit Villefranche, the winters remain as mild as they ever were. If you don't like the searing heat then this is a great time to visit.
The winter days are predominently clear, blue skied, sunny days with cold fresh nights. It is possible to be sitting in a T-shirt on the beach by day and wrapped up in woolly jumpers by night, the most important fact to remember is that it is dry. Not much rain and not much wind are the real key to the joys of this climate.
It is a calmer, quieter time on the French Riviera but that can also mean it's perfect for sight seeing, without the intense summer heat or the summer crowds. The Citadelle museum, in Villefranche, is closed during the month of November but there are different activities that become the main focus. The nearest ski stations are less than two hours away.
