The Corniches lay undeveloped for tourism longer than other parts of the Riviera because of it's difficult landscape and inaccessibility. Wild and mountainous in was untouched and lovely. The villages that existed were hewn from the hard rock and determination of the inhabitants.
Inaccessibility was survival. As the three Corniche roads were built however, they opened up this part of the coast and it became a much loved section of the Riviera and still maintains something of a country air. Many winter palaces and homes were established on sites of incredible beauty.
Present
The Corniches, with its amazing views and beautiful homes has attracted many foreign residents and now it is a summer favourite just like other places on the Cote d'azur. With many second and summer home residents the focus of life has shifted on the Riviera.
The summer season has become the main focus and many of the local communes organise events and activities based around this time scale.

The Corniches in Spring
The springtime on the Corniches is a particularly beautiful time, especially in the protected parklands in the mountains. The air is fresh and fragrant with new growth and with every spring shower it feels washed clean ready for the summer.
Springtime events along the Corniches include exhibitions, flower shows and sailboat regattas in Villefranche-sur-Mer, concerts and antiques fairs in Beaulieu, tennis championships and exhibitions in Eze. Each municipal organisies events, from Brazilian dancing to Chinese food tasting with something going on in each month. The biggest spring events on the Cote d'Azur include the Antibes Yacht Show in April, Monaco Grand prix in May and Menton Citrus festival in March.
Summer in The Corniches
The summer season officially starts in May, or rather the tourist season begins then. It is something of a soft start though and the begining is as lazy as the sound of the bees in the spring flowers. The summer is packed full of events across the entire region.
Every village, every commune, no matter how small or large, organises a stream of events throughout the summer season. Mostly these are geared towards holiday makers but there are a few that are very 'local' that you will stumble across and can often be the most fun.
The biggest events begin with The Cannes film festival and the Monaco Gand Prix and there are a host of 'red carpet' balls and fund raisers throughout the season. The summer is also the time for jazz festivals with Nice and Juan-les-Pins leading the way. In the Corniches you will find art exhibitions, summer, outdoor cinema screenings, street parties and parades and a variety of music festivals from classical, opera, Irish and guitar music. Check in with tourist offices where they will have dates, times and tickets.
Winter in The Corniches
Winter is a great time to visit the Corniches if you are crowd shy or interested in activity rather than beach lazing. The temperature is cool and fresh but with beautiful sun drenched 't-shirt weather' days to contrast.
It is also surprising to realise just how close to many ski stations you are from here and you can spend a day on the slopes in one of 5 major ski resorts and still be home in time for dinner over the Med. Isola, Auron, Valberg, Beuil and Limone in Italy are all within two hours drive or bus ride from Nice.
So follow the locals example and head for the slopes. Ski passes and equipent hire are inexpensive and there is public transport available. Your beach holiday can just as easily be a ski holiday and you'll still get a sun tan.
