The Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul de Vence will continue to show a collection of works by the artist Alberto Giacometti. The exhibition opened on 27th June 2010 and will remain on display until 31st October 2010.
Giacometti and Maeght have a close history and a shared passion for each others work and this exhibition is both a tribute and a celebration of the work and relationship between the two.
Giacometti was first introduced to Aimé Maeght in 1946 by André Breton. The two became friends immediately over a shared vision and passion for surrealist movement. Maeght became Giacometti's agent and organised solo exhibitions in his Paris gallery and the two remained close personal friends.
The Foundation Maeght in Saint Paul de Vence was inaugurated in 1964 and immediately became one of the most important private European collections. It is entirely funded by the Maeght family and is dedicated to showcasing modern art in all forms from painting and sculpture to ceramics and murals.
Set in the beautiful country side surrounding the town of Saint Paul de Vence the Maeght Institute features permanent displays by artists such as Miró, Chagall, Léger, Braque and Bonnard.
The exhibtion of the late Giacometti's work includes bronzes, paintings, drawings, engravings and documents, letters and video of the artist. It is curated by Isabelle Maeght.
It is an essential stop if you are holidaying or visiting the area. Even if you are not an expert on contemporary art you can not fail to be moved by the incredible works of art in such a natural setting, it is less intense than a formal gallery and gives the pieces a different perspective simply by the location alone.
