MONTE CARLO TENNIS MASTERS
Monaco, mid April - late April
The Monte Carlo Open has become a major fixture on the International tennis circuit. Running since 1969, it is part of the ATP Series and draws all the major players on the international circuit.
It takes place in the beautiful setting of the Monte Carlo country club and is a clay court competition. Former champions include Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Cédric Pioline, Ferrero and, for the previous three years Rafael Nadal.
The event is sponsored by Rolex and the setting is five star in the glamourous arena of Monaco. Last year, in 2007, the event won 'Tournament of the year award' as voted by the players themselves, in a demonstration of how much the event is loved by the athletes.
This year sees Scotland's Andy Murray debut at the event and as a prelude to the Paris Open it helps to set the scene for the coming year. Nadal will try to retain his crown for a fourth year running. Other entrants this year include Federer, Roddick, Hewitt and Djokovic.
