ALIEN INVASION ON THE COTE D'AZUR |
Posted on Wednesday, 3 February 2010 |
It was a typical beautiful sunny day on the Cote d'Azur. The sea was calm, the road was empty, the top was down, the sky was vast the Bougainvillea was riotous and the sounds and smells of summer in the South of France permeated the air and then suddenly....there is was. An alien invader! It had that comic book familiarity and yet a chill...strange...what's the word.. ah yes.....Alien!
Invaders from space, an assault? A holiday maybe? Perhaps even Space invaders need a break from the arduous destruction once in a while too. You will see them too, in the unlikeliest places, basking in the sun, gracing the hottest hot spots on the French Riviera; Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Menton, Saint Tropez. Lazing around the most glamourous locations, the most fantastic villas and lurking near the wondrous beaches.
Fear not however, these Space Invaders come in peace. They are the work of an anonymous Parisian artist who goes by the name of 'Invader' only. He has brought this original cast of video game monsters to reality and supplanted them not just across the glittering coast of the South of France but right across the globe.
Beautifully articulated in shiny tiled representations each pixelated character leaps from the walls, rocks and bricks of public buildings, private villas and the lush landscape of the Cote d'Azur. Their juxtaposition is like jolt out of the ordinary and presents a momentary chill, a thrill even just a question...What!?
They are a permanent living exposition, an eternal piece of performance art that brings the make believe into reality.
The artist has decorated his own city with 400 Space Invaders and has spanned the globe with alien visitations in London, LA, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Tokyo, just some of the numerous cities undergoing an Invasion. Helpfully the artist has also produced accompanying maps detailing the Alien sightings so there is no Area 51 secrecy to be found here.
The original Space Invaders were created in 1978 as an arcade game. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and built in Japan they remain one of the most successful video games in the world and their iconic little pixellated alien beings deserve to be enshrined on all our streets across the world. They revolutionised the gaming industry and launched us all and future generations on a fantastical, time-wasting, heraldic journey into the unknown.
So next time you holiday in the South of France and happen across one of our sun baked alien friends remember that they come in peace and even Invaders need a holiday once in a while.
