All that glitters in Monaco

Posted on Monday, 14 December 2009
All that glitters in MonacoAll that glittered in Monaco last Friday night was not gold, it was silver. Trophy silver to be exact, at the 2009 Formula One championship Gala dinner where Formula One's triumphant received their prizes for this years championship.

Jenson Button was presented with his Formula One world Championship title trophy which was relinquished by last years victor Lewis Hamilton. The trophy bears the name of the sports greatest drivers and Jenson delivered an emotional speech after seeing his name added to the list of greats.

Ross Brawn also took to the stage to receive his honours as Constructor's champion which was made all the more poignant as they became the first team to ever do so in their début season. An incredible achievement given that, at the beginning of the season, they weren't even sure if they would make the first race.

Not only did they make it, they won it and Jenson went onto claim 6 wins from the first 7 races. A clear indication of what was to come for the rest of the season.

Although nothing is ever for certain in Formula One and no driver can rest on his winning laurels until the last wheel is turned. True to form, the latter half of the season saw a young Vettel put up a serious challenge and finally be crowned the youngest ever runner up in a Formula One championship.

The records didn't end there, although there is no trophy for the title, Rubens Barrichello is the most experienced Formula One driver in history with 288 F1 races to his name. He was on hand at the gala and claimed "We fully deserve our Championship success and it was a real privilege to be part of such a strong team."

After a beautiful night in Monte Carlo the teams and drivers can perhaps reflect on their triumphs for a little while although, this being Formula One, all eyes are surely looking forward to the New Year already and the 2010 Formula One Championship.
