Formula One is getting it's own movie. It is not the first time that such an attempt has been made. Sylvester Stallone followed the Formula One circus for more than a year with a view to bringing the high octane magic to the silver screen.
Whether he fell foul of Bernie Ecclestone or the topic proved too hot to handle no one is quite sure but Stallone dropped the idea in favour of producing the film 'Driven', a rather limp Indy car feature that maintained the near 100% failure rate of there ever being a decent motor racing movie to make it to the cinema.
Now news has broken that production is under way on a brand new Formula One focused production. Before die hard racing fans shiver with dread at the thought of another thunderously dismal "ain't nothing I can't do with a race car" Hollywood heartthrob vehicle then take heart that this time it's going to be in the form of a documentary. A cinematic, fact fuelled documentary focusing on Formula One's Golden age of motor racing.
Which, for anyone who has lovingly sat through the endless reruns of the "In my day" interviews of Jackie Stewart and Sterling Moss, is not in itself entirely exciting news. What is exciting is that this is being produced by the same Emmy award winning team who brought us No direction Home, the Bob Dylan biography directed by Martin Scorsese and 2010 Academy Award nominated documentary writer, Mark Monroe.
So there is hope, hope that finally for Formula One fans there will be a chance to see some serious metal ripping through the big screen, with all the drama and flair that it deserves. It is slightly disappointing that it will focus on the days of yesteryear instead of the the hard nosed, flat out, cut throat business of Formula One today but it will, no doubt, include new footage and a new slant on a long and endearing sport and the sportsmen who risked their lives and started it all.
It won't hit our screens until 2011 but hopefully that means they will be filming new footage and interviews throughout the 2010 Formula One season. We may yet see Formula One feature at the Cannes Film Festival, with such a prodigious start surely it will be in the running for an award or two. |
