The streets of Monte Carlo have often been used as an effortless backdrop to films and movies. Whether it is the die hard glamour of a James Bond film or the hard core bling required in a gangster rapper video, the streets of Monte Carlo have graced the small and the large screen for ever.
The winding roads, the beautiful architecture and the swaying palm trees providing a naturally dramatic back drop for many a movie including the ambling drama 'The Romantic English Woman' with Michael Caine, the jaunty classic car rally themed 'Monte Carlo or Bust' with Terry Thomas, the epic 'Golden Eye' with Pierce Brosnan and Monaco's own heroine, Grace Kelly in 'To Catch a Thief' with Hollywood heart-throb Cary Grant, to name just a few.
More recently flashy stars like Usher and rapper 50 Cent have chosen the fast cars, fast boats, fast lifestyle of Monaco to feature in their own video's and advertisements.
Neighbouring towns have also not missed out with Robert de Niro tearing through the old streets of Nice and La Turbie in 1998's 'Ronin', or Jasan Streatham's Riviera favourite, 'Transporter'. Who can forget either, the gormless Mr. Bean wreaking havoc on the beaches of Cannes during Festival week or the dastardly fraudsters in Steve Martin and Michael Caine's 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' as they charmed their way around the French Riviera in the gorgeous Cap Ferrat, Beaulieu, Antibes and Villefranche.
In fact there have been more than 450 feature films that have used the French Riviera's luxurious locations for their scenery and we are still counting.
Although not all of them have been Hollywood blockbusters there are more recognisable titles than not. The latest all star cast to take to the Monaco streets are to be found in the French movie 'L'arnacoeur', or Heartbreakers. It stars Johnnie Depp's other half Vanessa Paradis and tells the story of a brother and sister who break up relationships for money. Andrew Lincoln, of 'Love Actually' fame, also stars.
Monte Carlo provides the setting for one such romance to be targeted for destruction, cue a wedding, a comedy of errors and the heart-breaker getting his heart broken. Sounds like a story we've heard before and seemingly never tire of.
The French title has been optioned by Universal Pictures for an English remake but until then we can enjoy the ever present glorious scenery of Monte Carlo and marvel and yet another title added to the growing list of feature films in the Principality. |
