NEW LOOK FORMULA ONE 2010 |
Posted on Monday, 18 January 2010 |
The 2010 Formula One season has something of a new slant to it albeit with some old faces returning to the mix. Dating even further back than Herr Schumacher is the name of Lotus and 2010 sees the famous Lotus return to the Formula One World Championship this year. A new partnership between the Malaysian government and a team of entrepreneurs to create an all Malaysian Formula One entry. The team will be officially launched on 12th February 2010 with team principal Tony Fernandes at the helm of the fledgling team.
The lotus name has not been in Formula One since 1994 but it is a name steeped in history, a very British history. Colin Chapman brought the lotus name to life as far back as the 1948 when he based the mark 1 Lotus on an old Austin chassis. He was primarily building cars for the road but soon got involved in the world of racing, although initially in the very British affair of trials competitions.
Through the following decades he took the Lotus name through the ranks of Le Mans, Formula Junior, Indianapolis World series and Formula One all the while producing that much loved and maligned enterprise of manufacturing English sports cars.
Chapman hit the big time between the 1960's and the early 1980's producing some of the most successful Formula One cars in history. He took world titles with driving greats such as Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. He suffered a fatal heart attack in 1982 and Formula One suffered a huge loss of one of the most successful and charismatic team principals ever known or seen since.
The Lotus name has been quietly burning on the back benches for several years but is set to return to it's rightful arena of Formula One Grand Prix racing. Initially the team will operate out of a facility in Norfolk, keeping it on British soil, in a factory that was built for the Toyota Formula One Team but it will ultimately be moved to Malaysia where a purpose built facility at the epang race track is planned.
Mike Gascoyne, formerly of Jordan F1, Toyota and Renault F1, will head up the technical department while driver spots occupied by Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, the experienced Italian and the latest flying Finn.
The Monaco Grand Prix takes place in May 2010. Riviera Rental Guide can help you find the perfect Grand Prix apartment for this spotlight race in the Formula One calendar. The 2010 season looks set to hold plenty of surprises for the race fans everywhere, not to be missed. |
