Ross Brawn has not just backed Michael Schumacher's return to Formula One but has gone so far as to tip him as next years Formula One World Champion. It's a brave statement given that Schumacher has not raced in F1 for four years and is going to be the oldest driver on the grid when he return to race in Formula One in 2010.
The seven times world champion however is surely the one driver in the world who can live up to that kind of confidence. He broke nearly every record standing during his previous career in Formula and it has been remarked that it is nigh on an impossibility for his status as an all time great to be beaten any time soon.
He was the golden boy of Formula One when he first arrived on the scene and has cleverly navigated a highly successful path through the maelstrom of Formula One in what can only be described as a perfect demonstration of his strategic skills also. Off track skills that he clearly took to the track with him.
The Schumacher that returns to us in 2010 is going to be a different driver no matter what his critics or fans say. Although he has never left the sport and maintained an interest within the Ferrari team, one cannot stop the passing of time nor the shift in perspective that naturally accompanies it.
He will undoubtedly be a more relaxed driver than in previous seasons, with a vast bank of knowledge and experience to draw on and while he may feel additional pressure with the international focus on his age, it is just one more benefit of those advancing years that will see him deal with it with a measure of distance and greater perspective.
Although Brawn is not expecting Schumacher to burst out of retirement and win the first race of the season, "He will need a few races to familiarise himself with the other cars and the many new drivers", claims the F1 Impresario but he is fully expecting a return to complete form very quickly. With new teams bearing old names and old drivers wearing new suits it is going to be at least an exciting start to an unusual season in Formula One.
