5 tips to help you get the most out of your break to Nice.
You've booked your tickets, you've packed your case, you've called the taxi and you are on your way to a quick short break to Nice on the French Riviera.
Nice is the perfect city for a short break but, if that's what it is, a short break to Nice, then you need to know everything about your holiday hot spot before you get there, and fast, to make sure that you get the best out of your trip.
Getting the best out of your break to Nice starts the second you get on the plane. Follow these tips to get the most out of your holiday.
Step one of your break to Nice Sit on the left hand side of the plane as you face the cockpit. The flight path to Nice follows the dramatic rise and fall of the snow capped Alps and you will get the best views of the city as you arrive at the Cote d'Azur airport if you are sitting on the right side of the plane.
Step two of your break to Nice Don't waste a second of the glorious sunshine, pack your bikini, sun glasses, beach towel and sun cream into your hand luggage. That way you can drop your bags immediately and hit the beach as quickly as you can. The Promenade des Anglais stretches for miles and you can choose your spot, spoil yourself in a beach club like Miami Plage or just grab a towel and drop it where you fancy.
Step three of your break to Nice Stay in the Old Town. The Old Town of Nice, or Vieux Nice, is the area where most tourists go and there is a good reason for this. The narrow meandering streets are enchanting, packed full of curious boutique shops, restaurants and bars. In the Old Town you will find local specialities and tucked away restaurants as popular with locals as much as with tourists.
Step four of your break to Nice Two things that are a must try in the Nice food department are Socca and Fenocchio ice cream. Socca is a flat, salty pancake made with chick pea flour and olive oil that is delicious as a lunchtime snack. It is best eaten from one of the socca street restaurants in Old Nice. You will see locals queuing to buy and eat straight away or bring home with them. Fenocchio ice cream parlours can be found in Place Rosetti and Boulevard Jean Jaures and off the Cours de Saleya. With over 30 different flavours they are a local speciality and worth jostling for position in the summertime queue.
Step five of your break to Nice Hit the town for the rocking night-life of Nice. In Monaco, Cannes or Saint Tropez you have to dress the part for the most expensive and glamourous night-life on the French Riviera. Nice, however, is famous for it's dark bars, live bands and slightly grungy but extremely fun night-life. Start in the Cour de Saleya where you can sit outside Akathor, Cafe des Fleurs or Ma Nolans bars for an evening 'apero' and watch the world slide by and the sun sink down. Have tapas at gastro pub The Snug and Cellar, collect a Fenocchio ice cream on your way to the depths of Waynes live music bar, Shapko Jazz joint or Havana salsa party.
In summary... Follow these few tips and you will see a side of Nice that is fun and captivating. There are many more areas to discover of course, we still have the Port, the Promenade des Anglais and the grand area of Quartier des Musiciens to explore, the architecture and the history to experience and more food and the wine to taste but the Old Town of Nice is a good start to discovering one of the best places on the French Riviera for your short break. |
