The 25th annual TV market and Trade fair, better known in the industry as Mipcom, has been in full swing in Cannes this week. With more than 12,000 TV executives and creatives hitting the sunny shores of Cannes to stare down the future of television and determine what we will all be watching in the next twelve months. With the current climate of doom and gloom it is no surprise that we, the hallowed TV viewers, are electing en masse to be entertained by light entertainment and comedy shows. Goodness knows we all need cheering up so it is not much of a prediction. It is most fitting then that this years 25 year old trade show in Cannes coincides with the 20 year, (yes! 20 year!) anniversary of The Simpsons. The esteemed Matt Groening was in attendance in Cannes to be honoured for his contribution to our collective mirth for the last 20 years. The Mayor of Cannes, Bernard Brochand, handed over a giant yellow key of the city to the Simpsons creator while Mipcom organisers rolled out bright yellow carpets to replace the traditional red. No doubt honoured by the attention it was an unfortunate incident that stole the show, provoked the best humorous response and turned the honours into a real 'Simpsons' moment when an elaborate, larger than life cardboard cut out of Apu collapsed into the audience onto a female journalist. Groening chuckled, promising that it would make it into an episode of the world famous TV show, "someone crushed by a Simpson's character. The sun smiled down on our yellow friends in Cannes with some of the best end of season weather that has been seen in recent years. With the bright summer sun warming our bones it is no wonder that reports for our TV viewing future are bright, light and entertaining to know. Mipcom continues in Cannes until the 19th of October. |
