It has been announced that the 2009 Tour de France will kick start in the principality of Monaco this coming July. HSH Prince Albert II is gaining a reputation for putting Monaco on the international sporting map and this world class event is certainly something of a feather in the Royal cap.
The invitation, it seems, has been extended since 2005 but has taken until now to finalise and secure. It will not be the first time since Monaco has hosted the tour, it has been here many times in the past but not since 1964. So it is long over due to make a return and it will be with open arms that the Monegasques welcome Le Tour back to the streets of Monte Carlo.
The roads may have changed a little bit since 1964 but the enthusiasm for Le Tour de France remains unchanged. Cycling is a hugely popular sport in France and the steep mountain climbs of the South of France have produced some world class cyclists of their own.
The ascents will not be the hardest that the riders have to endure on the 2009 Tour but they will get the hearts pumping and prepare the pros for what is to come. Doubtless they will not be able to enjoy the pretty scenery or the world famous nightclubs and parties of Monte Carlo but that doesn't mean that the rest of us can't.
We will surely raise a glass of the sparkling stuff and salute them as they pass, we may even wear a yellow jersey in honour and we most definitely will turn out in Force to welcome La Tour de France to the Cote d'Azur. |
