U2 IN NICE 2009 |
Posted on Tuesday, 31 March 2009 |
"2009 is going to be our year", so said the band when explaining the delays to their new album. Which begs the question what year isn't their year? So prolific and successful have they been that it is hard to remember a summer that hasn't included some rousing Bono battle cry to soundtrack our summer days, already "Get on your boots" is permeating like a harmonious Buddhist chant.
This album may have seemed like a long time in the writing for the U2 boys themselves but the rest of us are still ringing from 'How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb', can it really be four years since it's release? Who isn't still jumping at the merest whisper of " Unos dos tres catorce!"?
'No Line on the Horizon' is U2's 13th studio album and, judging by critics reviews, thirteen is going to be a lucky number for the band. Despite a few snide sideways snipes at the rock legends ages and typical Bono-esque high drama lyrics the critics are proclaiming the album yet another U2 masterpiece.
"It's a brand new chapter for us" says Bono, "musically it feels like a departure", which is saying a lot for someone who has not just written the chapter or the verse but entire volumes of books on the subject.
The band worked on the album throughout 2008 and 2009 in their Eze recording studio in the Edge's and Bono's beach front French home. It is said to be experimental and yet deeply personal with a culmination of all the things they have learned over the years.
The Edge wants people to "really listen to it" and hopefully find Eureka! moments in it. For Larry it is "weighty", while Adam seems to have enjoyed the invited guest writers and the experimental nature of the album, while for the front man himself it has been a wander lyrically through his own imagination, creating different characters from different places around the world.
As always it will no doubt have a message, be meaningful and on occasion be just a little bit irreverent.
While Dublin is always the spiritual home of U2, it seems that the French Riviera has played its part in contributing to the creative process and the boys remained holed up in their beautiful Eze villa while they put the finishing touches to what could be "their greatest album yet."
The 360 degree Tour will kick off in Barcelona on the 30th June 2009 but the rock legends will be bringing the music back to one of it's creative homes at least on July 15th when they Nice's Parc des Sports Charles Ehrumann stadium.
Tickets are said to be sold out but if you are fan enough there always seems to be a way and no doubt there will be a flurry of private tickets sales, radio offers and plain old begging outside the gates prior to the gig.
Nice will ring to the sound of U2's anthem on July 15th before continuing onto Berlin. There are still dates available to buy according to the bands own website but many are sold out.
So if you have any 'Desire' to see U2 in action but there's 'No Line on the Horizon' in Nice then it might just be time to 'Get on Your Boots' and follow the tour to another European city, it might just be the 'Sweetest Thing' you've ever done...it had to be done.
