July 4th belongs to the Americans but 14th July is a day that belongs to France. It is a national French holiday when the entire country celebrates the storming of the Bastille in 1789. It is a day that French people celebrate more than a historical event, it is a celebration of the very essence of France and the French psyche, a national independence day.
14th July 1789 represented a culmination of a brewing dissatisfaction in France of the nations working classes with the ruling class and the monarchy. It marked the beginning of the French Revolution and the end of the Monarchy in France.
The Bastille itself was a prison but it represented King Louis XVI absolute power, seizing control of the Bastille was a symbolic move to show that the King's control was no longer unbreachable. By releasing the prisoners within the Bastille came to signify the ideals of the French revolution; Liberty, Equality and Fraternity,
Celebrations take place throughout France with a grand military procession in Paris attended by the heads of State. The French people will be united in the celebrations as they partake of picnics, games, concerts, events and firework displays that will light the skies over the entire country not just the South of France.
Nice Promenade will be closed and with Nice Jazz Festival, Jazz a Juan and 14th July balls in Cannes, Monaco and Beausoleil it will be a night of celebration for everyone. |
